egyptian statues

Egypt is synonymous to mysticism. Mysticism in its culture, the rich history, art, traditions… Egyptians were quite religious and worshipped their Pharaohs and Queens. They were firm believers in life after death and assumed that the spirits of these powerful people must be kept appeased. Thus statues were made from stone blocks to instill the soul or spirit within. Since these statues were symbolic, only the images of powerful people were deemed esteemed enough to be created and recreated.

Artisans had to adhere to various restrictions while creating an Egyptian statue e.g. he could carve the statue in only three poses i.e. either sitting, kneeling or standing.  Yet another typical characteristic of these statues is the dimensional aspect i.e. most statues have a cubic domain. Also, the sculpture was made to look very upfront as though the figure is in deep thought and staring straight ahead. Most egyptian statues are very similar to each other in terms of position, size, demeanour etc.

Unlike the conventional European or Greek sculptures, these artistic statues were painted in chromatic colours to emphasize the affluent life of the Pharaoh or Queen whose face is depicted. But a few must-dos were common amongst all artisans i.e. female sculptures were painted in fairer shades that highlight her fairness and beauty. But even male statues were made to look youthful and charming. Each statue has a code in terms of hieroglyphics as a message inscribed on them.

Due to their attractive and colourful properties, Egyptian statues are considered to be a premium décor element. A variety of images are used to create these statues. Of these the most popular are those of the sacred Isis, sphinx, the beautiful Nefertiti and king Tutankhemen (Tut, as more popularly known) The azure blue and golden mask of King Tut is a world- famous symbol of the Pharaoh. Egyptian statues are made of Sarcophagus, which is a burial material. Another burial material used for statues is the Canopian jar.

Be it at home, in office, 5-star hotels, restaurants etc. these popular statues ornate each corner with a similar alluring aura. They weave a historical ambience around them as though peaking out their life story to the people in the same room. Due to their heritage value, Egyptian theme statues are some of the most preferred décor elements. ~ author Karishma Bajaj
