It's possible sometimes to get an engineering technician's job without formal training, but most employers prefer candidates with at least a 2-year degree in engineering technology. There are various career options for auto mechanic when it comes to formal training.

For formal training, you can go to a junior or community college, technical institute, public or private vocational school, or the branch division of a university. Whichever training option you choose, you'll still need some on-the-job training in the form of close supervision by an engineer or an experienced tech when you take your first job.
