hair colors

Hair is colored in different colors primarily to be in with fashion or to hide one’s age. Hair coloring has been done artificially from the time of the Romans, but the first safe commercial hair dye was made by Eugene Schueller in 1907.

Artificial hair colors can be applied as gels, mousse, sprays which are temporary and will fade away in a couple of washes. Semi Permanent and permanent hair colors are also available In Germany, for example red hair color is the craze for women even though it is not that common a naturally occurring color in that population.

The amount of melanin in the cortex determines the color of the hair. Black hair has a lot of Melanin and white hair has none. Melanin is of two types, eumelanin and phaeomelanin, the former being responsible or hair color from black to brown and the latter for red and yellowish hair color. Natural hair colors can be broken up into Blonde, Brunette, Redhead and Black hair color.

Blondes always have a shade of yellow varying from very pale blond hair to reddish strawberry blonde colors. Brunettes have either dark brown or black hair. Red Heads are found mainly in the British Isles and in a few numbers in Korea and Japan. People of India and Asia have very dark hair. The texture and density of hair also affect hair color, as it is perceived. Overall it is geography and genetics that determines Hair colour. People living in the North have limited sunlight and therefore need little or no melanin and thus have light colored hair as opposed to people living at the equator. Hair color also has a psychological role, it is an indicator of reproductive health and possibly a form of power display.

Albinos, who have a total absence of any kind of color are generally shunned by society and are seen as weak.  Chemicals too can affect hair color, exposure to pool water with a high concentration of chlorine can tint the hair green. Iron dissolved in water can turn blond hair into a murky brown. This can be treated with Hydrogen Peroxide or Shampoos.

Some ailments associated with Hair Color are:
1) As a secondary symptom of several disease processes, hair may turn gray prematurely.
2) Poliosis is when patches of white hair develop in otherwise pigmented hair.
3) Piebaldism and Vitiligo can result in patchy white hair in afflicted individuals.
