Hair is something that has always fascinated and captivated people. It contributes greatly to a persons looks and a change in color or style can radically alter the appearance of a person. So what is it that gives hair its natural color? If your are a blonde or red-haired, you probably have more of phaeomelanin pigment and if you are a down to earth black or brown haired, concentration of eumelanin pigment is high.

The absence of these 2 pigments spells disaster for your hair is full of those dreaded strands gray, which people tend to look at askance. All however is not lost; artificial hair dyes used properly produce marvelous results. Let us see how this metamorphosis takes place.

Ever heard of Lawsoniainermis? This is nothing but our common henna, which is available now in the powder form. Mix this with water, apply the paste to your hair and hey presto! A red tint covers those annoying grays. These natural pigments usually color only the hair shaft.

Metallic hair dyes, which contain lead compounds, can give startling colors ---a vivid red, a violent purple, a sober green or a dashing violet. The advantage is that these colors wash of easily as they are deposited only on the surface of the hair fiber. If you happen to be one of those who favor yellow for their hair, go ahead and bleach it. Hydrogen peroxide decolorizes the melanin but the natural color of the hair protein (keratin) filters through and you have become irreversibly blonde.

A piece of advice though, black hair when bleached can be unattractive unless you choose a bleaching formula designed exclusively for black hair. There are so many bleaching powders, creams and oils that you have to be careful and choose the right one.

Hair dye products may be divided into three categories, i.e., permanent, semi permanent and temporary hair dyes. Permanent hair dyes are the ones that people must often turn to for help. The name is perhaps something of a misnomer for it is not just a one-time application. It is just longer lasting than the others. Called Oxidation hair dyes, they contain Paraphenelenediamine, which is a basic constituent of these dyes. This comes in one bottle and the hydrogen peroxide called the developer in another bottle. When equal quantities of these two liquids are mixed and applied to the hair, the gray is magically transformed into the color of your choice.

The difference between a permanent dye and Semi permanent dye is that the latter does not require a developer. In ordinary parlance this would mean that the liquid, gel or aerosol foams can be directly applied to the hair without any prior mixing. However frequent applications would be required to sustain the color as the dye fades with time, exposure to environment and regular washing of hair.
