Cosmetics are applied only to the surface, but few of us realize that the human skin is dynamic tissue, which also absorbs all, or part of the cosmetics into the bloodstream. Research has shown that almost 60 % of what is applied finds its way to the circulatory system. Calculated over a period of a lifetime, it would amount to quite a lot. The question then is “ what do we do about it?” We cannot do without cosmetics, but we cannot dump so many chemicals into the bloodstream. The only way out seems to be is to resort to something less harmful but equally potent as far as make up is concerned. This then is where natural cosmetics come into the picture.

Natural cosmetics are relatively safer and healthier options than any other range of products as they are made from natural substances. This would imply that the product is derived almost naturally and is relatively free from any artificial additives. Plant waxes, essential oils, barks of trees, spices and extracts from flowers would be good alternatives. Indians have always had more faith in such natural elements and even today, grandmother’s recipes for a beautiful skin is in vogue. If the skin is fed with the right materials, skin problems like acne or dermatitis, allergies and irritations can be kept at bay. This augurs for a healthy skin and a healthy body. Organic botanical extracts and essential oils from marigold, chamomile and ginseng deliver tremendous benefits to the skin and hair.

In contrast to the synthetic chemicals found on the shelves of stores, natural cosmetics have been specially formulated not to hurt or irritate the skin. It is free from mineral oils and drying alcohols, does not clog the pores, contains no animal by products and best of all come in packaged containers that are recyclable and biodegradable. Indian mythology is full of personalities who resorted to natural formulations to remain beautiful. They did a pretty good job of it.

It may seem that the range of natural cosmetics is limited, but that is definitely not the case. Consumers are in for a surprise. A wide range of products, which cater to everyone and everything, is at our doorsteps. Scrubs, balms, oils, formulations for moisturizing, exfoliating, and cleansing and even for the removal of make up are available. They are just as supportive to the skin as the usual range. Bath salts, Liquid satin soaps and massage oils have revolutionized the concept of having a shower. Hair formulations for thin and thick hair, dandruff control and to enhance color, even toothpastes, mouthwashes and products that heal and clean are available. That is not all. If you want something that unclogs pores or minimizes them,  you do not have to look far. Natural astringents made from white vinegar, other natural ingredients diluted with rose water are excellent pore cleansers.

Cold creams with olive oil, chamomile mixed with rosewater and beeswax are all time favorites for sensitive skin. Beeswax rates high and is valued for its levels of potassium. It helps to lock in the moisture and actually forms a barrier, which prevents pollutants from attacking the skin. Vitamin E eye creams are excellent antioxidant moisturizers, which neutralize free radicals and also help to reduce those fine lines.

There are natural potions containing Grape seed oil, cocoa butter, rosewater, borax, aloe Vera, and anhydrous lanolin, which keeps the skin smooth like silk. The beauty of natural products is that it has natural oils, contains no petroleum baaed waxes or oil and they naturally help heal and moisturize. So the next time you buy cosmetics just focus on the word “natural”. Live a healthy lifestyle, eat right, get enough  sleep and exercise. You will just glow with vitality.
