If you are very keen on finding out how to publish a book, then there are
some things you must know before you start on the venture of getting a book
published. In most cases, some of the very biggest publishers tend to not
take a look at a manuscript unless you have an agent.
However, most publishers are willing to take a quick glance at non-fiction
work. And most times it is the medium sized or small publishers who are much
better choices for a first-time author. This is because they are happy to
look at manuscripts cold.
However, you should not rule out the idea of an agent just yet. This is
because you just might require an agent who would do for you all of the
other arduous work. Without an agent, it would be difficult to mange as you
would first require to do some research on presses.
After the research is done, what needs to be done next is a preparation of a
package that can be submitted to the various publishers. Then you need to be
geared to make follow-up calls. Of course after all this done and taken care
of, the only thing that can help you in getting the book published is the
book's merit and luck.
An added tip in the above steps is to buy a notebook in which you can keep a
detailed record of all the interactions about what days you send a package
to which publisher, which publisher you talk to, etc. This tip will be very
helpful to you if you end up submitting a package to 30 publishers and have
four interactions with each. You will see that it is close to impossible to
remember when to call whom and when to send what unless you have managed to
keep a detailed account.
