An orthodontist specializes in the correction of uneven or irregularly spaced teeth and jaws with braces, retainers and other dental appliances. An orthodontist is a specialized dentist who deals with the prevention and treatment of malocclusions. It is a highly focused field pursued by both men and women in equal numbers. Orthodontic procedures are performed by only licensed and trained dentists. An orthodontist performs a number of functions including treatment for crooked teeth, cross bites, open bites, facial abnormalities and overbites among others. Orthodontic treatment is an important part of general health and millions of people have benefitted from this particular profession. These professionals not just assess, prevent and treat dental and facial abnormalities but indirectly help the patients in improving their confidence and self-esteem.
Orthodontists diagnose the problems after having a thorough look at x-rays reports and decide on a plan of treatment. They also perform oral surgery and treat patients with cosmetic issues. Many orthodontists also perform treatment for purely cosmetic reasons on demands of affected patients. An orthodontic can specialize in different departments such as oral surgery, cosmetic orthodontics and pediatric orthodontics etc. This is a promising career and is equally rewarding.
