Every day, thousands of commercial and private aircraft perform a variety of tasks such as carrying passengers to different parts of the world, dispatching cargo materials and other related tasks. These aircrafts are handled by highly trained professionals that fly these aircraft and carry out various different duties. These professionals are known as pilots. A pilot is officially licensed to fly an aircraft like military airlines, commercial airlines, and private airlines.
To become a commercial airline pilot in USA, one needs to have a bachelor's degree in any subject. But ideally, one should complete his majors in fields such as aviation and aerospace Engineering. To be eligible for flying commercial airlines, pilots must record thousands of flight hours. They also need training in flying various types of aircraft. Most pilots complete flight school training at FAA approved institutions. One also needs to check flight with an FAA aviation safety inspector. All the pilots need to have a FAA issued commercial pilot’s license with an instrument rating. To get a license, one needs to have flight experience and clear a written examination. Commercial pilots need to understand the technology and mechanics of planes.
Most of the time, military pilots convert to commercial pilots. In UK, one needs to apply for a scholarship with a commercial airline to become a trainee commercial pilot. Those interested in becoming a pilot can obtain a Private Pilot's License (PPL) and subsequently a Commercial Pilot's License (CPL). One is awarded with PPL after he clears written exam, passes medical test and flying time of 45 hours. Additionally, one can qualify as a commercial pilot by completing the Civil Aviation Authorities (CAA) CPL. One also needs to have a good set of GCSEs and A-levels.
To become a commercial pilot in India, one first possesses a Student Pilot License (SPL) the basic eligibility for which is higher secondary examination with at least 50% marks in physics and mathematics and candidates must be above 17 years of age. Some other requirements include registration at a flying club recognized by Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), medical certificate, security clearance and a bank guarantee. The second step is of applying for Private Pilot License (PPL) in which one has to go through a training involving sixty hours of flying. The final stage is of commercial pilot license (CPL) in which one has to complete 250 hours of flying.
In India there are several institutes that offer courses in commercial pilot training:-
