Flight Attendant

 

While you board a plane, have you come across females with pleasing personalities greeting you, checking your tickets and instructing you about your seat and carry-on items? Yes, they are flight attendants. Because of the increasing number of passengers who have started to take flights, demand by commercial and private aircraft for qualified attendants has increased exponentially. The job of the flight attendants is to provide service and assure that all passengers are safe and abide by the airline regulations. Flight attendants make the journey experience for the passengers enjoyable and comfortable. They are trained to inform passengers on emergency evacuation and safety procedures along with flight time, current weather conditions and several other such issues. Before the flight takes off, the attendant makes sure that all the passengers have their seatbelts securely fastened and equipment is properly stowed for takeoff and landing. She provides all the assistance required by the passengers.

Law requires airlines to have flight attendants on board. The attendants perform several roles. Their duties include providing first-aid and other emergency equipment aboard the aircraft. They are in charge of food and beverages on the plane. Flight attendants are expected to report any issues or problems, lost and found materials, and cabin conditions at the end of each flight. They help small children and elderly or disable persons who need assistance. They direct passengers about the evacuation process following an emergency landing.

As far as training and education requirements for flight attendants are concerned, there is formal college education required to become a flight attendant. It would help to have some college education with background in subjects like hospitality, communication, education, psychology and sociology. Once the attendants are selected, they are made to undergo through a special training program which usually last between 3-8 weeks. The program covers subjects like fundamentals of aviation, customer service, first-aid, food service safety, emergency procedures and how to deal with unruly passengers. Trainees are also trained in studying passport and customs regulations. Sometimes, they are also taught to handle extreme situations such as hijacking and terrorist threats.

Candidates are given FAA’s Certificate of Demonstrated Proficiency after completing the training program. All flight attendants need to be certified by the FAA.

There are bright chances for flight attendants in aviation sector. Employment growth is expected to register good growth in coming times. Almost all the airlines are expanding their passenger carrying capacity and that will lead to demand for qualified attendants. Those with college degrees and public experience will have the best job prospects.
