Illustrator is basically a type of artist. It is a very exciting career choice for those inclined towards creativity. It is the responsibility of the illustrator to express and clarify complicated ideas through images.

As far as educational qualification for illustrators are concerned, there is no formal training required. However, in recent times, companies look for candidates with degree or diploma or certification in illustration courses. Many illustrators have done courses in animation or multimedia. There are plenty of courses offered by top class colleges, universities and art schools in courses as diverse as animation, fine arts, visual communication and illustration. Candidates can go for bachelor and master degree programs in these courses for better employment opportunities.

An illustrator greatly enhances his employment chances by creating a portfolio showcasing his works. He can use computer generated illustrations or hand drawn artistic pieces for his portfolio. Additional knowledge in subjects like sketching, drawing, and composition etc can do wonders to his career. Quite a number of bachelor courses help students in preparing portfolios. Illustrators get the best learning opportunities during the internship. They get a chance to learn from senior illustrators or industry experts in this field.

Considering the proliferation of websites, demand for illustrators is expected to remain high. Though, this field is very competitive but illustrators with keen sense of details, learning tendencies, good experience and impressive portfolios will receive rewarding job offers. Illustrators should also keep themselves updated with latest software in computer imaging. Acquiring new expertise in this field can prove very beneficial in the long run. Those with an artistic bend of mind, creativity and excellent drawing talent should do well in this field.
