Marine engineer

Marine engineering is a very crucial part of developing marine vehicles. The engineers in marine are specialized in performing basic essential tasks including design, construction, maintenance and support commercial, naval and recreational vessels. They also have to handle equipment that propels and controls the vessels. Considering the share of freight carrying ships in world trade, the role of marine engineers become very vital in handling some of the largest moving vessels on earth. They are skilled in hydrodynamics and mechanical engineering which proves to be of immense benefits in steering and propulsion of the ships. They also keep a tab on seaworthiness and aerodynamic efficiency of the vessels. Marine engineers are trained to handle work on watercraft of all sizes and uses.

Marine engineers can be found on small crafts, fishing vessels, passenger and exploratory ships. Their job profile includes working with various offshore structures and other floating systems. Marine engineers are employed by offshore companies, government, shipbuilders and even private shipping companies. To become a marine engineer, one must have a bachelor's or master's degree in Marine Engineering. The minimum requirement is a bachelor's degree. This is a complex field which requires understanding of difficult subjects like hydrodynamics, mechanical engineering and grasp on subjects like calculus, chemistry and physics. They need to understand hydrofoils, fluids in motion, hydrostatics, offshore structures and propulsion.

No more than ten universities in the USA offer degree courses in Marine Engineering. Candidates must display a strong aptitude for math and physics. They need to have virtues of patience and great learning capabilities. They also need to absorb minutest of details. Merchant marine engineers need to obtain license. There are good employment opportunities available to merchant engineers. Those with extensive experience and license will have no difficulty in finding rewarding jobs. It is a career perfectly suited for those with deep interest in water transportation, ships, and boats.

The marine engineering courses available in India are, B.E marine engineering, M.E marine engineering and Ph.D. To get into the B.E Marine engineering course, one must have passed 10+2 or equivalent with physics, chemistry, mathematics and English. The course duration is of four years. Eligibility criteria for M.E marine engineering is successful completion of B.E. The course is for two years.
