General Physicians have always been one of the standing pillars of our healthcare system. Physicians provide care and treatment to the patients. The handle a wide range of problems like cold, cough, nausea and chronic diseases like cholera and jaundice etc. The job profile of a physician includes diagnosing and managing chronic conditions that do not require the attention of a specialist. If we talk about general physicians, they are also known as primary care practitioners, general practitioners or family practitioners. They handle problems like flu, infections and sprains. They also advice patients on whether they need to consult a specialist and other forms of treatments. General physicians not just provide treatments to the patients but also educate them on healthy lifestyle habits and other common health related problems faced by them. He takes care of both physical as well as emotional well-being of the patients seeking treatment.

To become a general physician, one must go through a rigorous education and training program. The course can take more than ten years to complete. That way, it is definitely one of the most demanding career choices. A general physician must complete a bachelor's degree program first and then prepare for Medical College Admission Test. The test is very demanding and completion is very intense. Candidates must strive to get good scores in the test apart from possessing an excellent academic record. The medical school program is of four year duration. After that, the physician needs to join a three-year residency program where he receives training specific to his field. That’s not all. Once he completes the residency program, he needs to obtain a state license and then only he can start his own practice.

The course is no doubt very demanding. Physicians need to adhere to a strict set of professional ethics. They need to have virtues like patience and tolerance. They should be able to work under pressure. Physicians can work in one or more of several specialties. Some of the specialties include psychiatry, anesthesiology, surgery, general medicine, general pediatrics, general internal medicine and obstetrics and gynecology.

To pursue a career as a general physician, one must clear the entrance examination for MBBS courses. The basic eligibility is passing of 10+2 or equivalent in science stream. Once the student has cleared the undergraduate course in medicine (MBBS), he can go for a postgraduate degree in medicine (MD in general medicine). The college providing the course must be recognized by the Medical Council of India (MCI). Qualified general physicians can work in government dispensaries or private hospitals in both urban and rural areas. They can also start their own private clinics.
