Wedding management refers to the process of helping a family to have a wedding in the most organized manner possible where family members can enjoy the ceremony, just like guests. Wedding planners or bridal planners or wedding consultants take care of complete designing and coordination of weddings right from designing invitation cards, deciding venues and decor to trousseau packing, designing the stage for the couple, providing dancers, bands, singers, catering and much more. Planners must be equipped with the knowledge of wedding industry and different wedding themes. He/she must be a good planner and should be able to handle all the complexities involved in the marriage arrangement.
A wedding planner has to deal with suppliers, designers and caterers. He will be aware of all the minute details of the wedding. He must have great negotiation skills to get the best discounts and deals from the suppliers. It is a time consuming profession but definitely a rewarding one.
There are no specific formal education and training required by the wedding planners. However, it would be better if they have at least a high school diploma or a college degree. In recent times, quite a few colleges and universities in USA, UK and India have started to offer certificates or degrees in wedding planning but they have yet to gain popularity. The best way to learn the intricacies of this profession is through working on real events. People with experience in hospitality, catering or floral business have better chances of doing well as a wedding planner.
A client will always ask for the ideas and experience of the planner and not his degree and diplomas. Yes, an additional degree or diploma in management or event management will prove useful in setting up your own start-up but it is the experience that counts in this field. Most of the planners work independently. It can be a great career choice for new age entrepreneurs.
