Biochemist

Biochemistry is the study of chemical composition of the cells and a biochemist is a person who carefully studies it. He is basically a chemist who analyses the chemical composition of living organisms. His job includes performing a detailed study of the chemical processes involved in all basic life functions. Biochemistry is a highly specialized field. Biochemists play a vital role in educating us about complex subjects like heredity and genetics. Their presence facilitates the work of the researchers in developing breakthrough applications in the medical field. Biochemists are adept at collecting relevant data, so very essential in finding new discoveries. Their work has often played a major role in diverse fields like criminal justice and agriculture. If on one hand they have helped in improving DNA analysis, hence helping millions of people to find justice, on the other hand they have proved invaluable in developing new and better pesticides, thus enhancing the fertility and crop yield.

Biochemists investigate minor details like occurrence of cellular processes or for that matter, programmed cell death and replication. Their work can extend to researching varied subjects like strands of DNA, proteins, genes and hormones. They can also investigate effects of certain foods, pollutants, and drugs on cellular tissue and entire organisms for better understanding of different functions. The research done by biochemists often proves instrumental in development of new medications.

As biochemistry is a specialized field, the education qualification is at least a master’s and preferably Ph.D. Those biochemists that are involved in the biochemical industry or teach in universities usually have a Ph.D degree. They earn their degree on the basis of their research work. There are many research biochemists that have a master’s degree. They often work under the supervision of senior biochemists. Most of the lab technicians or secondary school biology teachers or research assistants have at least a bachelor’s degree.

The course curriculum for biochemistry education usually covers subjects like biology, chemistry, physics, nutritional biochemistry, macromolecular metabolism, physical biochemistry and molecular biology etc. Usually, biochemists begin their education by earning a B.S in biochemistry. This enables them to work as a research assistant or research technician. Later on, they can move to M.S in biochemistry and Ph.D etc.

As the name suggests, biochemistry integrates two fascinating subjects, biology and chemistry. They research and investigate all sort of chemical combinations involved in growth, heredity, metabolism and reproduction etc. They are into both basic as well as applied research. The education for biochemists include both classroom and laboratory instructions.

Biochemistry is believed to be a recession-proof industry. The research process is of ongoing nature so demand for qualified biochemists remains steady irrespective of economic environment. As far as salary for biochemists are concerned it depends upon region and industry. But it is a competitive field to get into. One requires top level knowledge and qualification to make a career as a biochemist. They can find work at government agencies, research firms, universities, pharmaceutical companies and private research institutions.
