Business Analyst

 

The term business analyst (BA) encompasses a range of career options. Interestingly, the profession of BA performs a wide variety of functions in a range of industries. But no matter what are the industries, there are certain common traits of a Business Analyst and that includes, arranging meets with the present and prospective clients, scoping and modeling a project or element of the business and finally submitting the results to the client. In general, business analysts are associated with information technology sector but scope of the job is much wider than that. A business analyst can be found in many spheres of the business. He can work as an independent professional or can work for business firms who are commissioned to work on specific projects. His specialty is to provide perspective on different angles of the business. He is required to identify areas for improvement and evaluate problems and opportunities within the business. A business analyst evaluates the feasibility of a solution and possible outcomes and develops the business solutions for further implementation. His job further extends to monitor the continued need for and success of the solution and adapt as necessary.

Business Analysts are expected to look at things from neutral perspective. They not only need to be constructive and critical but also look at small but crucial elements of the business including sales figures, staff turnover, marketing strategies and industry analysis. The role of business analyst is very crucial in long term success of the company. They add value and drive changes in the model of the business. They also assess the viability of new projects. Because of the complexities involved in modern day business scenario, the role and responsibility of business analyst becomes even more prominent.

Business analysts are also known as management analysts. Most of the BAs work for consulting firms or on individual basis after gaining significant expertise and experience. As far as education and training for business analysts is concerned, the eligibility criteria differs. Many a times, just a bachelor degree will be sufficient to get a job as entry level business analyst. However, it is always better to get a master degree or higher to acquire substantial job profile in this field as this profession requires depth of understanding of all aspects of business.

As such, there are no formal qualifications required to perform this career but in recent years, quite a number of quality institutions have started to offer degree programs specifically geared towards business analyst training. One needs to have a strong educational background apart from detailed knowledge of the industry. Interested candidates can look for course of Certified Business Analysis Professional (CBAP) offered The International Institute of Business Analysts (IIBA).

The demand for business analysts is expected to grow significantly in coming times. The simple reason is rise in the number of businesses and focus on corporations by government. The growth is expected to occur in a variety of fields’ right from IT and health to real estate and construction. This is a well paying job and there are excellent opportunities for advancement in this area.
