Marketing management is a highly specialized field. The career in marketing management can be exciting, challenging and rewarding. Marketing managers perform a wide variety of functions. Their duties extend to everything from planning strategies to promoting a product or service to as wide an audience as possible by means of events, websites and advertising. They identify the target markets and promote their products and services accordingly. They have to oversee the 4 important P’s of marketing such as product, price, place and promotion. Efficient and effective marketing personnel can change the fortunes of an organization. There are plenty of real life examples where smart marketing techniques have catapulted an organization to the top of the rung.

Most of the marketing managers specialize in a particular product or market. It could be FMCG or consumer durables or financial services or telecom. A good marketing manager keeps in mind the budget and time scales available to the company and accordingly makes strategies. His job profile includes assessing customer research, market conditions, and marketing plans. He needs to have good interpersonal and communication skills because his job requires him to work with other professionals. He aims at maximizing organization’s market share and profit. A marketing manager tries to meet customers’ needs. It is a dynamic job profile as marketing managers cannot sit on past laurels. They have to constantly monitor the emerging trends in the market and identify the need for new products and services.

Though a simple bachelor degree in marketing or related field is sufficient to get entry level job in marketing department but ideally, large corporate prefer candidates with a master degree and extensive experience. Some of the common subjects mastered by marketing managers are management, marketing research, advertising principles, business law, and marketing concepts. A successful marketing manager is able to implement theoretical marketing principles to practical settings and evaluate trends and consumer behavior. The chances of getting a good job in marketing management department increases substantially if the candidate has completed his MBA with specialization in marketing. Most of the marketing courses require students to complete internships to gain hands-on experience while pursuing their education. Apart from that, students often take membership in professional organizations to remain updated with latest trends.

Marketing management is an evergreen field where demand for qualified professionals is always high. Add to that ever-changing economy and growing population and you have a lucrative career prospect waiting for you. Those with advanced education and extensive experience will have the best job opportunities.
