Pharmacist

The primary job of a pharmacist is to distribute prescription drugs to the individuals. However, they perform several other functions including advising their patients, physicians, and other health practitioners. The advice can range from selection and dosages to the side effects of medications. Pharmacists also ensure that patients are using the medications safely and effectively. Usually, pharmacists receive medicines from pharmaceutical companies in standard dosages but they can also compound medications. Compounding refers to the actual mixing of ingredients to form medications. It is also the responsibility of the pharmacists to counsel patients on the use of prescription and advising them about general health topics, such as diet, exercise, and stress management. Pharmacists who own or manage community pharmacies can also sell non-health-related merchandise. Considering the roles and responsibilities performed by pharmacists, they are definitely one of the most important personnel in the field of health related issues. They have to acquire license to run their business.

The modus operandi of pharmacists is very simple. They get prescription requests from health care providers and assess the safety and effectiveness of the medication. Apart from providing all the details about the drugs, they also keep an eye on the progress and health of patients. Different places have educational eligibility criteria for pharmacists. For instance, in USA, candidates are required to obtain a Pharm.D Degree from a school of pharmacy or college that must be accredited. To get into the Pharm.D programs, students need to clear the Pharmacy College Admissions Test (PCAT). The course curriculum provides students with instruction on all concepts of drug therapy. The teaching methods include, classroom lectures, and hands-on experience in many different pharmacy practice settings. Students are supervised by a licensed pharmacist. Pharmacists need to obtain license.

In UK, students need to undertake a 4 year undergraduate course in pharmacy, followed by a Masters in Pharmacy qualification (MPharm). Several renowned universities offer an appropriate course but in order to get the license, candidates must ensure that course is approved by the Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain (RPSGB) which is the professional and regulatory body for pharmacists in the UK. Aspiring candidates must have A Levels in science subjects as well as mathematics. Once the course is completed, students need to complete one year of practical training. It requires spending at least six months in a hospital or similar medical institution before taking a final registration exam.

It is estimated that employment prospects for pharmacists are expected to rise significantly in coming years. The reason is increase in demand for prescription drugs and aging population. Rapid job growth will also drive demand for qualified pharmacists. It is a well paying job and that is definitely a huge factor going in favor of this career. Like any other profession, pharmacy is a great profession for those who are passionate about the work involved in this field. People with good academic background and proficient in solving problems and communication skills can do wonders in this profession. A good pharmacist must be attentive to the details.
