Physical therapist

Career as a physical therapist is demanding and yet rewarding. Physical therapists help patients in improving mobility after an unfortunate incident like trauma, stroke or even accidents. They teach patients how to prevent future injury and how to reduce pain. Sometimes also refereed as PTs, physical therapists are qualified healthcare professionals who perform a wide range of duties ranging from diagnosing and treating individuals to developing fitness oriented programs. Physical therapists treat patients of all ages. They excel at handling patients who have limited mobility. They help patients in performing functional activities as they would like in their daily lives. Physical therapy is a highly skilled job where PTs are expected to examine each individual separately and accordingly develop a treatment plan. They assist patients in reducing pain and restoring functions.

Usually, functional problems arise as a result of stroke, back and neck injuries, amputations, strains and fractures, multiple sclerosis, arthritis and burns etc. There are other conditions such as cerebral palsy which can hamper the movements of the body. Physical therapists thoroughly examine the cause and effects of the problems and use interventions such as manual therapy techniques, therapeutic exercises, electrotherapeutic modalities and other physical agents to treat patients. The job of physical therapists is often interrelated with other professions like occupational therapists, physicians, audiologists, dentists, speech-language pathologists and nurses. PTs are a very crucial part of healthcare system. They perform the duty of overall rehabilitation of the patients suffering from pain and immobility. Their role further extends to helping people in overcoming disabilities and managing chronic physical conditions etc. Looking at the duties performed by physical therapists, it comes as no surprise to find huge demand for qualified PTs.

Physical therapists can be found at clinics, hospitals, schools and outpatient care facilities. Many therapists start their own private practice. Those interested in pursuing a career as a physical therapist needs to complete a bachelor degree in a related field. The course curriculum usually covers subjects like biology, chemistry, anatomy, physics, human growth and development, biomechanics and neuro-anatomy etc. A bachelor degree can help in getting an entry level job but to further advance your career as physical therapist, one will require to complete a master degree in physical therapy program accredited by a recognized body. The candidates also need to clear state and national physical therapy certification exams to gain physical therapy licensure for the state in which they practice.

As discussed earlier, physical therapy is one of the most in-demand career options. The US labor bureau expects a demand jump of 27% for PTs in coming years. The figure is certainly higher than other related industries. Because of reasons like ageing population, advancement in medical technologies and increase in stress, trauma and fracture related incidents, physical therapists are always required. Those with right credentials and experience will have no difficulty in finding a job that pays well. It is also a highly satisfying job because physical therapists are helping to improve patients’ lives. A physical therapist career is a rewarding occupation and certainly a great career choice.
