Psychiatry is a very crucial field of medicine. This field deals with mental illness and disorders. Dealing involves treatment, studies and preventing specific kind of mental disorders. Psychiatrists use variety of treatment methods to treat patients with mental issues. They are licensed physicians who can also be termed as primary mental healthcaregivers. Their job profile includes assessing and treating patients through a combination of psychotherapy, psychoanalysis, hospitalization, and medication. Psychiatrists observe changes in the behavioral patterns of the patients and based on that they offer solutions. They also explore their past experiences, and group and family therapy sessions. The field of psychiatric treatment is not just about quick fix solution. This involves long-term psychotherapy and counseling for patients. Many a times, patients are prescribed right medications to correct chemical imbalances that cause emotional problems.

Apart from mental disorders, psychiatrists also look into emotional and addictive behaviors and disorders. It is an important part of their job profile to understand the psychological, biological, and socio-cultural aspects of mental illness. A psychiatrist needs to be empathetic, patient and understanding. He needs to be familiar with diagnostic laboratory tests to assist in his treatment plans. A good psychiatrist makes patients talk about their problems and create solutions by changing things in their lives such as behavior or environment apart from helping patients who have experienced trauma, crisis, stress, and other problems occurring in life. Most of these problems are of ongoing nature.

To become a psychiatrist, one needs to complete 8 years of postsecondary education (undergraduate and medical school) and 4 years of residency and internships. They are also made to work on patients under supervision of experienced physicians in a variety of health care settings. Quite often psychiatrist students volunteer to work at psychiatric health facilities to gain hands-on experience. The residency programs give them a chance to get some payment while simultaneously receiving job training. The residency programs are very crucial in gaining better experience. The students get to experience clinical expertise in all areas of psychiatry.

In USA and UK, psychiatrists need to be licensed and for that they need to complete their graduation from a medical school that is accredited. They are also required to complete residency requirements and clear the licensing examination. The certification allows them to start their private practice or they can join any hospital or work under supervision of a senior psychiatrist. This is one of the most prolific job profiles in world because of rise in number of stress related disorders. Growing population and increased need of mental health services further fuels the demand for qualified psychiatrists.

For those who wish to work in low income areas or rural places, chances of getting a suitable employment are even higher. Psychiatrists are known to earn good salaries. This is one field where professionals tend to earn more with experience and word of mouth publicity. It can be a great career choice for individuals with strong interest in mental health. Apart from the basic qualification, psychiatrists need to be open-minded, verbally strong, self-motivated, patient and person-oriented. Emotional stability is another must.
