Aeronautical engineering is a highly specialized field. The primary role of an aeronautical engineer is to design and engineer flying machines. At some places, they are also known as aircraft engineers. The role of an aeronautical engineer is very crucial in studying, designing, developing, constructing, maintenance and repair of aircrafts. Aeronautical engineering is a branch of mechanical science which basically focuses on principles of flight. This job demands high mathematical and scientific precision. One will require having a background in physical sciences, chemistry and mathematics in order to pursue a career in aeronautical engineering. In UK, an engineer should have A-levels in science or math based subjects. Several prestigious universities offer courses in aeronautical engineering which are usually accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET).
Those willing to study aeronautical engineering in USA must have a bachelor's degree. This is a specialized field and the number of candidates choosing this career is quite low. One needs to acquire licensure before offering their services directly to the public. The licensing requirements include an engineering degree from an ABET-accredited engineering program, 4 years of relevant work experience, and completion of a State examination. One must gain practical experience before he/she can harbor hopes of a lucrative job opportunity.
Aeronautical Engineering course in India can be done at undergraduate and Post-graduate level. To join BE / B.Tech program in Aeronautical Engineering, one must clear 10+2 with Science ( Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics) or equivalent examination with at least 60% of marks in the aggregate. Thereafter, one needs to clear the Joint Entrance Examinations (J.E.E.) which is conducted by the IITs. Apart from IITs, several other engineering institutions offer courses in aeronautical engineering. Once the students have successfully completed BE/BTech, they can further go for M.Tech or PhD program in aeronautical engineering.
