The primary task of a bookkeeper is to record financial transactions, such as revenues, expenses and costs. It is a very important job profile for companies and businesses. By recoding financial transactions accurately, a bookkeeper helps the organization in running the business successfully. A slight mistake in bookkeeping and it can cost severe trouble to the company. That’s why, bookkeeping is considered as a specialized job where the bookkeeper has to ensure that all the transactions are included in the accurate general ledger, customer ledger, suppliers’ ledger and daybook. The role of a bookkeeper further extends to preparing invoices and bank deposits, handling payroll issues, keeping track of overdue accounts and making purchases. Bookkeepers make the job of an accountant much easier by providing vital information. Producing income statements and correct balance sheets wouldn’t have been possible without the help of bookkeepers.

Bookkeepers handle all the records and receipts of the business. It is their duty to ensure correctness of the every transaction. They need to be diligent and must be detail oriented. They can’t afford to make any mistakes. It is a very responsible job that demands utmost accuracy and perfection. Many experienced bookkeepers are also assigned the responsible task of preparing reports or producing financial statements. It is not an unusual sight to see bookkeepers performing the job of an accountant in a small organization. Bookkeepers should be aware of fraud prevention, merchandise inventory, wages and taxes, adjusting entries and should be able to correct the registered accounting errors.

Usually, bookkeepers take care of all the books of a company. They create reports for supervisors to review. Bookkeepers are found in almost all the organizations. They are a small but very vital part of finance department. These professionals are well aware of accounting software, spreadsheets and databases. It is a career for those with strong interest in numbers and financial transactions. Modern bookkeepers are well versed with knowledge of different types of accounting software. The job requires them to be orderly and detail-oriented. They should also be able to identify errors. Virtues like discreetness and trustworthiness goes a long way in this profession.

If you want to become a bookkeeper, you must have at least a high school diploma and some coursework in accounting or related work experience. Now a day, many firms are looking for bookkeepers with an associate degree in accounting or business. If a bookkeeper wishes to further advance his career then he should also think of getting a bachelor degree. It will help him/her in making inroads into finance or accounting field. Job chances become bright when the bookkeeper has been certified by the American Institute of Professional Bookkeepers. But for that, he will need to have a minimum of two years of work experience and pass the written examination.

There is no dearth for qualified bookkeeping professionals. Emergence of several new businesses coupled with economic growth has fueled the demand for qualified bookkeepers. Those with significant experience will always have better job chances.
