Gemologist

 

Gemology as a subject of study deals with gemstones. A gemologist is trained and qualified to identify and assess a wide variety of gemstones. He sorts out and grades these stones. A gemologist scientifically studies the gems and deals with the occurrence, physical properties and identification of natural gems. The role of a gemologist is very crucial in gem industry. He acts as a valuable support for traders, merchants and the overall gem business. He describes, analyses and certifies a variety of gemstones. He also advises traders regarding various properties of gems and the suitability of particular gemstones in different metals and settings. There are other career options in gemology as well like gem assorter, gem grinder, jewellery setter, gem polisher, engraver and gem researcher.

Gemologists have to note down every small details of gems like crystal structure, specific gravity, refractive index etc. These professionals can identify treated natural gemstones, natural and synthetic gemstones, fracture-filled gemstones and color-enhanced gemstones. Gemologists appraise and value gemstones to be sold to jewelers.

As far as training and education of gemologists is concerned, some of the skilled gemologists have bachelor or master degrees in the gemology. One can also go for a bachelor degree in fine arts or jewelry design. Training in gemology is provided by several public and private colleges. This field demands high level of expertise which is provided by technical or vocational schools. The training programs usually last for 6 months to 1 year depending on the program. The program teaches students about tools used in gemology, setting stones, identifying a variety of gemstones, and other important aspects like polishing, casting and designing. On the job training or apprenticeship programs are very crucial in this field and that’s where gemologists learn the most.

Most of the gemologists are self-employed. However, one can find good job opportunities in retail shops, repair shops, designing and creating custom jewelry, large jewelry houses, merchant gem wholesalers, gemological laboratories or as quality control specialists.

India is one of the largest producers of gems. A large percentage of world’s diamonds are processed in India. India is also the largest consumer of gold in the world. The country has earned great reputation for its gem craftsmanship and skills of its gem cutters. No wonder, career as a gemologist has a bright future in India. Plenty of courses are offered by renowned institutes in the field of gemology. The basic eligibility criteria is completion of 10+2 (any stream) or graduation. Most of the courses are of short terms. The course curriculum usually covers subjects like gem's identification and coloring, ornamental designing, metal concepts drawing techniques, design methodology, metallurgical processes, computer aided designing and traditional and modern processes with specialization in jewellery designing.
