Historian

 

History is a fascinating subject. We all love to know about historical facts. If you have a love for history and are willing to share it with others then historian is the career for you. As a historian you will be able to study the institutions, events, ideas, institutions and individuals of the past to unearth precious information. You will also be able to uncover patterns hitherto unknown to the humans. A historian answers questions pertaining to our past. He provides a historical context for understanding modern issues and that is definitely a fascinating task. A historian is also a teacher who loves to share his findings and knowledge to the world through his involvement in cultural institutions, like museums.

A historian gathers the information through numerous researches. He/she analyses and interprets the past occurrences of human civilization and makes us aware of new findings. History as a subject is extremely vast and that’s why majority of the historians specialize in particular cultures, countries or time periods. Additionally, one goes even deeper for further sub-specialties like history of water cultivation or history of slavery or history of women. There is no limit to sub-specialties that one can master in this field. It’s more like deeper you go, better are the chances of you finding precious pearls. Historians are the most important links to our past. Most of the historians are employed in colleges and universities as teachers/professors. They can also be found as museum curators or archivists. Government agencies like cultural departments etc also hire services of historians.

One must acquire a bachelor’s degree to get into entry-level positions in historical research. But that wouldn’t take you too far so it’s always recommended to get a master’s or doctorate in history. Additionally, one will require having solid knowledge of statistics as historians have to deal with large sets of data. They also need to be proficient in different research techniques. Other needed tools are knowledge of computers and new software for data collection and analysis. A historian would do well to take courses in the language and literature of his chosen specialty in order to immerse himself in the subject. Employment opportunities will be available to those with extensive field experience. Museums, government agencies, universities and historical societies etc look out for qualified historians. They can also work as part of a large research team.

In India, there is specific course for a historian. However, one can think of other related careers like archaeology, curator, and archivists. These are the courses related to history. Interested candidates can complete their graduation in history and go for postgraduate degree and diploma courses in archival study or archaeology. One can also apply for research fellowships. Other career options are museology and conservation etc.

It is a career for those who have deep interest in studying the recent as well as distant past. This is not a high paying job but the subject itself is so fascinating that historians do this job for the sheer love of it. They thrive on making present and future generations gain understanding of our glorious history.
