Housekeeper

A housekeeper is an integral part of a hotels, hospitals and residential care facilities. They are responsible for the general management and running of these establishments. Housekeeping job can be very demanding. He/she has to ensure that all jobs within the house or hotel are finished in time in best way possible. This job is part managerial and part hands-on.

Housekeepers in managerial positions will be responsible for recruiting, dismissing, training and supervising all the other staffs working in the premises. They inspect all the work. They have to make sure that all the work performed in the hotels, resorts or residential property is of high standard. A housekeeper needs to direct all the in-house staffs about safety and cleanliness standards.

A housekeeper has to manage all the basic tasks within the stipulated budget. He/she needs to be very disciplined and should ensure all the works are being done in an orderly manner. They need to check for all the faults and repairing issues also. Usually, a housekeeper is not required to have a formal qualification. In this career, experience matter more than the qualification. But in recent times, employers are looking for certain qualifications. So, one should ideally have a basic education including GCSE Maths and English. One can go other courses in UK like BTEC National Certificate/Diploma in Hospitality Supervision, BTEC HND/HNC in Hospitality Management, Hotel and Catering Management and NVQ in Hospitality, Hospitality Supervision, or Hospitality and Supervision.

In USA, like UK, no formal education is required for entry-level housekeeping jobs. Most of the workers learn their skills on the job. But to enhance the job chances, a housekeeper should have at least a high school diploma, or a diploma or certificate from any of the technical and vocation colleges. These courses teach housekeeping techniques and procedures and supervisory skills. Some of the progressive housekeepers are registered with the International Executive Housekeepers Association, which offers two kinds of certification programs, Certified Executive Housekeeper (CEH) and Registered Executive Housekeeper (REH). Getting these certifications can increase chances of job offers substantially. One needs to attend course and clear the passing exam to earn these certifications. After the course, one can seek employment opportunities in hotels, hospitals, casinos, and other large institutions.
