The concept of commodity trading is not a new phenomenon for Indian retail and institutional investors. Trading of commodities in India used to take place years ago. In fact, commodity trading was a flourishing business in India during 1970s but soon after, because of restrictive measures and regulations imposed on the market, this field started to lose its luster. The restrictions were intended to curb the speculative trends of the commodity market but it had a negative impact. Commodity market didn’t remain the same for next few decades but it once again gained the momentum after the removal of a few restrictions that were embedded by the Government of India. Now, India has 4 national level commodities exchanges including multi-commodity trading, which gave a new lease of life to commodity trading market in India. Now, traders can trade in all permitted commodities.
The reemergence of commodity market has also triggered the need of commodity trading professionals. There is a substantial demand for professionals in this field. Subsequently, a number of institutions have started to offer commodity trading courses in India. These trading programs provide a practical introduction to commodity derivative products, including pricing, hedging and structuring commodity derivatives. Courses in commodity trading programs cover both exchange traded and over the counter commodity derivatives along with hedging and structuring considerations from both buyers and sellers perspectives. Such programs have come as a boon for those who are willing to make a career in commodity trading.
Compared to stock broking and capital market courses, commodity trading programs are relatively new which in turn, offers wonderful opportunities to the early birds. Lack of qualified commodity trading professionals in India is one reason, why these programs have started to gain popularity. Interested candidates can join NCDEX commodity certification course launched by NCDEX Institute of Commodity Markets and Research (NICR). The institute is a subsidiary of NCDEX. The course aims to promote commodity trading. It also seeks to enhance the level of competencies of professionals working in the fascinating field of commodity trading and futures. The most striking aspect of the course is that, it is a self-study course delivered in two segments of introductory segment and applied segment. Candidates joining this course are trained in both academic and applied knowledge perspectives. One can gain significant insights into the working of commodity trading through this course.
The National Stock Exchange and Bombay Stock Exchange also offer certificates in commodity markets and derivatives. Named as commodity market module, candidates need to pass the online examination to obtain the certification. There are few other institutes also that conduct courses in commodity market trading, arbitrage trading and currency trading in India.
