Chinese music

The Chinese are proud of the music history they inherit. They proclaim that when European music was in its infant stage, Chinese music had already developed. Even the renowned philosopher Confucius propagated music. He was of the opinion that music calmed passions and aided unrest and lust to disappear.

Chinese music is based on a penchant pentatonic or a five-tone scale. But the heptatonic or the seven-tone scale is also widely used elaborating the pentatonic scale.

Chinese music can be further divided into 4 categories. The first category is that of bowed strings. They are made of wood and snakeskin is stretched over the sound box. The second category is that of plucked strings, the third is the woodwind section and percussion instruments make the fourth. These categories were born due to the constant encouragement the music masters received from the Dynasties that reigned in ancient China. The era of the kings have disappeared but the music they bred lives on.

Chinese songs evolved through farmers and fishermen who sang as they toiled through the day. Then songs reigned during festivals, fairs and the trend continued.

Today Chinese artists have won international acclaim for their melodies and their magical voice. Western music is even blended with Chinese music to create new rhythmic experiences.
