If we go back to the history pages to find out the origin of bells, the
first mention of it directs us to the pagan culture. Bells were
initially used as a protection against evil spirits during the months of
winter and autumn. The underlying belief was that loud noise created by
bells will ward off evil spirits. It was used on a mass scale because of
its availability. With the passage of time, use of bells also changed.
From being used to keep evil spirits at bay, it was started to be used
as a way to celebrate festivals. This tradition also spread to other
culture and since it has remained in existence. Even ancient techniques
like Feng Sui, places special emphasis on use of bells.
Soon, churches started to use bells during every happy occasion. The
widespread popularity of bells can also be attributed to it being
inexpensive. Compared to other musical instruments used to create sound,
bells never costed much and thus it became a useful alternative. Because
of its soothing and happy musical sound, bells were used in Christmas
carolling. Its importance can be further witnessed in eight reindeer of
Santa Clause. All eight reindeers wore numerous small bells that were
also known as jingle bells. In true sense, Christmas bells are a way to
celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ. No wonder, bells are integral part
of traditional Christmas celebrations..
