Introduction to cold fusion


ColdFusion is simple and powerful, and easy-to-use environment in which Web based applications can be rapidly designed, prototyped and deployed. It has the capability to work with databases and interacting with Internet through HTTP, FTP, e-mail etc., here the security and authentication is also maintained. Using Secure Sockets Layer the Web Server encrypts the pages. Like Java, C++ coding is not required for developing the ColdFusion applications, merely designed using HTML with combination of server-side markup language, ColdFusion Markup Language called CFML.

ColdFusion Markup Language
ColdFusion Markup Language (CFML) is a markup language similar to HTML (HyperText Markup Language). CFML is a tag based like HTML. CFML includes the design and action performed in the form as server-based programs. Most of the Web Application uses both the HTML & CFML, in order to process the ColdFusion server to generate the complete Web pages for the end-users. CFML tags (can be viewed latter in detail) signal the ColdFusion Application Server to perform operations. Each tag has its own function such as including a block of code from another file in to the current file.
All the ColdFusion tags begin with the letters CF.
ColdFusion Application Server
The ColdFusion Application Server handles the contents of CFML & HML. These files are converted into complete Web pages for delivery to the user’s browser. The ColdFusion Server receives the request of WebServer in order to process ColdFusion application pages. The Application Server is an extension of the Web Server that handles the processing of all files containing CFML tags and returns pure HTML files (to the web server) for delivery to the user. ColdFusion uses an API to communicate between the Web Server and ColdFusion Application Server.
ColdFusion Studio
For ColdFusion, Studio is an integrated development environment (IDE). In which the applications can be developed. It is an interface for Web page editing, SQL statement building, tag and expression interacting and remote development. Thus it is a development tool, which includes the dynamic page previews within the Web browser, an expression builder and has major role of debugging. The Studio has project management and source control tools, which helps to produce interactive applications.

ColdFusion Administrator
With the help of system administrator install the ColdFusion Server and Web Server (IIS). Now start the ColdFusion Application Server, to check whether server is running go to services option in the control panel and confirm it.
Once successfully the servers are running then from the start menu you can view the ColdFusion Administrator. Now Administrator is an application that enables managing of the ColdFusion Application Server through a simple, forms-driven Web interface.
It’s time to create database connections, managing security settings and indexing content.
Once you entered into the administrator then create an ODBC Data Source Name and Data Source file. ColdFusion supports any database, which has ODBC standard. Not only ODBC the data can be retrieved from OLEDB, directory servers that support the Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP), native database drivers, POP (mail servers) and so on
An XML- based framework is used for extending ColdFusion with new server components. The Connectivity is made using the systems COM, CORBA, C/C++, JavaScript, VBScript, ActiveX and CFML.
