History says that the birthplace of journalism is India. In 1780, James Augustus Hickey in Bengal established the General Advertiser of Calcutta. It was also known as the Bengal Gazette. It consisted of only two sheets of newspaper. The focus of this newspaper was the personal lives of the sahibs of the company. However, the small action by Hickey got enlarged in shape in the later years and today it is a giant mode communication.

The minimum journalism qualification is bachelor of journalism. This means a student passing the twelfth standard can be admitted to any journalism college. One of such institution is the Indian Institute of Mass Communication(IIMC). It was established on 17 August 1965. It was estimated as a department of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Government of India. On 22 January 1966, it was declared as an autonomous institution under the Societies Registration Act.
The IIMC now offers the following courses in journalism:
• Post-Graduate Diploma in Journalism: This course is performed under 3 languages such as, Oriya, Hindi and English and its duration is 1 year. The eligibility should be graduates from any discipline and for the candidates, those who are waiting for their results.
• Post-Graduate Diploma in Radio & T.V Journalism: This course is also conducted in English and Hindi; Duration: 1 year, Eligibility: graduates from any discipline can apply; candidates awaiting their results can also apply.
• Post-Graduate Diploma in Advertising & Public Relations: Its duration is around one year. Any graduate can eligible for this course and it is applicable for the candidates who are waiting for their results.
