There is a distinct link between alcohol and the occurrence of intimate partner violence. Use of alcohol increases the severity of domestic violence. Most of the abuse perpetrators are under the influence of alcohol while abusing their partners. Victims of domestic violence have often reported that their partners had been drinking prior to committing a physical assault. This fact holds merit in almost every country, right from USA, England to Africa and India. If on one hand, domestic violence is a universal malice, influence of alcohol makes it even more serious. Though, men are also reported to be a victim of domestic violence at the hands of their intoxicated wives but the number is definitely far lesser than the women victims.
Abuse victims receive brutal battering from their alcoholic spouses. The combination of alcohol and domestic violence is extremely fatal for not only the partners but family, children and healthcare and economy as well. The use of alcohol increases the chance of partner abuse eightfold. Quite often, the abuse results in killing of the partners. Though, it is hard to confirm that alcohol use always results in domestic violence but the truth is, a large percentage of domestic violence cases occur after the abuser has consumed alcohol. Alcohol is not the only influencing factor here. Drugs and substance abuse also instigates occurrence of domestic violence.
Men with alcohol abuse problems and who are indulged in domestic violence often try to justify their actions. They simply blame all their actions on alcohol. Alcoholism not just causes problem in a marriage but it is also a grave social menace. It disrupts the functioning of certain parts of the body including the brain. Alcoholism certainly affects a person’s social interactions and behavioural patterns. It damages relationships. An alcoholic needs help else he can destroy his family and inflict psychological damage to his children.
Children are greatly influenced by alcoholic parents. They are also prone to physical, emotional and sexual abuse. Continued alcohol abuse is a major risk factor for violence in intimate relationships and family. There is definitely a correlation between alcohol abuse and domestic abuse but it must be seen as the overlap of two separate but frequently occurring social problems.
