Dealing with family violence

Family violence covers a broader prospective. At one point of time, family violence only referred to physically violent acts but with the passage of time, other forms of abuse also included under the scope of family violence. The term includes children, spouse, family members and elders being subjected to abuse. Family violence can be physical as well as intimidation, mental, emotional abuse and exploitation.

This menace can be defined as any “form of abusive behaviour within a relationship or a family where an individual attempts to control the other or others”. Social or financial control along with emotional cruelty is also a part of family violence. There has always been a constant debate over domestic abuse being a part of family violence but because of the large scale and magnitude of domestic abuse, it is considered as a different subject.

Family violence, most often than not, goes unreported simply because, it is seen as a matter that should be dealt with in the family home. Community has got nothing to do with what is taking place inside the boundary wall and that’s how family violence became an accepted way of life. The issue got strengthened from the belief that the man was the master of his own home and he has got every right to behave the way it pleases him. Men are still considered as the primary perpetrators of family violence.

It has been observed that, family violence is more of a universal phenomenon and there is high ratio of incidents of family abuse taking place in western countries. So there must be concerted efforts from all quarters to tackle this problem. Dealing with family violence demands a multi-fronted effort. It is not just the victims but also the perpetrators that require support of people from relevant fields like law, medical, social services etc. It is the duty of the victim to consult support groups or law authorities to cope with and to rebuild his/her life. Family violence tends to get worse as the time progresses. It will be sheer fallacy to expect some miraculous changes in the behaviour of the culprit. Sooner, one takes the action, better are the chances of finding a solution of family violence.
