White dresses gained popularity gained popularity in Brittany in the 1600s.Wedding rings were exchanged and were usually made of some very strong metal like iron as the breaking of the ring was considered a bad omen. The bridal dress was made of two layers, an overdress called a cote – hardie and an underdress called a bliaut. The groom wore a voluminous gown called a houppelande, which could be made of any material like wool, linen, cotton and velvet depending on the persons social status. It was customary for the bridal party to dress similarly to the bride and groom to confuse evil spirits. Different styles were popular for the bridal dress, for example the bliaut could come with side lacing, back lacing or front lacing. The sleeves could be flared or large drapey sleeves. The neck could be either square neck, round neck or V-neck. In India, in medieval times the wedding dress varied according to the region. In Rajasthan the bride wore a lehenga whereas a maharashtrian bride would wear a nine-yard saree. Brides in Gujarat wore Sarees styled in Red, White and Gold. In Bengal, white sarees with red and gold borders were preferred.
