Pageant dresses have been coming into the forefront of the fashion scenario.  This is mainly due to the fact that beauty pageants have come a long way.

They are no longer a small town local affair, rather they are now held on an international level, and have been receiving wide coverage from the media. This event also had wide sponsorship, hence has received greater publicity over the years.

Pageant dresses are the highlight of the contestant's wardrobe.  Since pageants are no longer a single affair and involve various levels of interaction from not only with the judges but also with fellow contestants, those participating have to tailor their wardrobes to the different activities they will be involved in.

For instance, the preliminary rounds involve interaction between various judges of the pageant who study the contestants for their in built traits such as personality, confidence, hair, smile, and complexion .. to name just a few.

During these interactions, the contestants need smart suits and other designer type casual wear for which they will earn points. True, pageant dresses nowadays, involve more than just a smart evening gown. They now include smart swimwear, which could be accompanied with a sarong or a smart kimono styled wrap, shorts, t-shirts, culottes, pant suits, cat suits, costume of the country and of course the evening gown for the finale.

Pageant dresses can take on different styles. For the outdoors, trendy outfits definitely make a difference. Interaction with the judges would involve more demure kind of clothing such as skirt suits or pant suits or may be even a smart looking dress. One could also resort to wearing a traditional type of outfit that is from the country of origin e.g. an Indian could wear a sari or a salwar /churidhar khameez. Pageant dresses for the final round should be kept simple with clean lines and flowing.  This could be an evening gown either couture or from a local dressmaker.

It could be of silk, satin or chiffon and could be encrusted with crystals, colored beads, colored stones, or rich embroidery that does not overwhelm or overshadow the wearer of the gown.  Colors for the pageant dresses should be considered keeping the lighting in mind. Whatever ones choice, it is best to keep pageant dresses simple and elegant. - Author F. Peris
