Tips on
Wedding Dressing : vintage
wedding wear
The following rules need to be borne
in mind while shopping for vintage wedding dresses.
1) How much to pay: The points to consider include whether the gown comes
ready to wear or will require repairing and the extent of repairing
required. Is it going to be a minor dry clean and darning job or something
extensive? The cost of archivally cleaning a gown can be more than the cost
of the gown itself. Also there may be some restoration work required.
2)Know what to shop for: Educate yourself on the specifications you have in
mind. Start by doing some window-shopping and scout for ideas instead of
buying the first gown you see.
3)Always know your measurements: Units for measurements vary and therefore
it is a good idea to ask for the garment measurement in inches or
centimeters only and at the same time be very sure of your own measurements.
It is best to avoid dealers who pressurize you into buying a gown.
4)Be sure about the condition of the gown: The older the gown is more are
the chances of it having passed through more than one hand and hence it
becomes imperative that you are satisfied with the condition of the gown.
For this you can ask as many questions as possible.
A wedding gown with satin bias cut gown, buttoned down the back or closed at
the side was popular in the 30’s. A modification to this style was done by
adding a two-piece belt buckled at center waist with a rhinestone duette.
Sleeves were long and would taper at the forearm., The wedding dress would
also come with a detachable train which would allow the bride to wear the
gown as evening wear after the wedding.
A natural sleek appearance was thought desirable in gowns and the accent was
on bias cutting and the drape of the fabric.
In the 40’s, the Bertha collar and the sleek look of satin gown were
incorporated into one with illusion netting. Lace and Frills were also used
in the yoke as trim but on the whole wedding gowns in the 40’s had a very
minimalist look with a Basque waist and sweetheart neckline. A hidden metal
side zipper or a button and loop back were used.
Long sleeves that tapered with a wedding point over the top of the hand were
in vogue Sleeves were long and tapered with a wedding point over the top of
the hand.
The wedding gowns of the 50’s had a lot of lace, were constructed with 24
feet of Chantilly. The 60’s were quite permissive and even the mini skirt
found acceptance as a wedding dress. The hippie movement had its effect too
with hemlines were ankle skimming and a natural look was preferred.
