winter coats

Times have changed, fashions have evolved and with it the “ good old winter coat” which emerged from mothballs once a year has witnessed a revolution of sorts. From a necessity it has now become fashionable to wear coats, which range from the trendy trenches and sleek cardigans to polos and turtlenecks, of varied length. Knee length winter coats are the fashion and the shorter version is definitely more practical while driving a car or bike. With mid thigh styles of dressing in vogue, the knee length coat does make a lot of sense.

Woolen coats are here to stay. The warmth that they provide varies with thickness but the lining of the coat also plays an important part. Plaid, viscose or polyester insulate very well. Shearling coats with exteriors made from leather, nylon or suede provide enough warmth to tackle a really cold winter.  By themselves alpaca, cashmere and camel hair coats are expensive, but they are durable if properly cared for. A more affordable option lies in a blend of these materials with wool.

Coats made from such material wear well and mid length coats are very popular in winter. Nylon winter coats and parkas especially parkas with hoods lined with fur are becoming more popular because they are lighter. Quilted down coats are stylish to look at and good to wear. Turtlenecks are always in demand and a great way to stay cozy through a long, cold winter.

Trench coats, especially the all purpose ones can be worn over pants, dresses, jeans, over anything at all. Choose the right one and it can be used to suit any occasion. The three quarter style coat is more versatile than the longer and shorter versions. The colored trench coats seem to dominate the scene, but the classic black and khaki trench coats worn with bright scarves below or over can brighten your mood a cold winter day. Wear a felt hat and don on some leather gloves and you are fit to meet a king. Padded coats made from polyester are easy care winter wear.

With zippered pockets which function as hand warmers, detachable hoods with drawstrings and chin warmers, these coats are very attractive, and spell warmth and comfort. The ubiquitous tweed coat never loses out and the leather coats are today’s fashion. Quilted puffers and fiber filled anoraks compete for a top place while the three quarter length Modern Duffle coat with detachable hood and buttoned up collar goes hand in hand with fashion. The hard canvas wearing parka and the Mod tail back Parka ideal for any type of weather vie for a top place.

Slimming is the rage of the century and winter coats have followed suit. From bulky, thick and heavy versions, the styles have become sleeker without compromising on insulation. Synthetic material now rules the roost and jackets and coats hug the body. Thermolite consisting of fluffy fibers that resemble cotton, insulate wonderfully. Thinsulate is warmer than down and like thermolite does away with the bulkiness and thickness normally associated with winter coats. There is a lot to choose from the variety of winter coats available. Just make your choice wisely and well.-
