Effects of domestic violence on children

 

The legal angle and protection against domestic violence is a huge term. There are specific stipulations that cover verbal abuse that include name calling or insults. Hence we must educate ourselves and seek protection, if ever we come across such happenings. The law is well chalked to offer reprieve to the aggrieved person. There are homes too for women and her children to seek refuge. Enabling them with skills to provide a better life and financial security is the motive of many social workers.

The children get affected in the worst way. A daily trashing may become habitual. People under the influence of alcohol or drugs seldom understand the situation and a regular act of violence soon becomes a routine activity. Children often do not understand the behavior. The main reason can be interpreted as a way of life. They look at it as a quick fix and copy the behavior on their friends. This can have a disastrous effect on their personality.

There are several cases where wife beating takes a huge toll on the women’s confidence. Putting up with such a person is difficult and yet several homes do not encourage a woman to raise an objection. Hence the woman puts up a silent display and gets brutally affected mentally and psychologically. The effects on children results in a severe impact. They fail to recognize the worth of family and in many cases they begin to understand that this can be employed as a means to state authority.

Strong cases of physical abuse or even sexual abuse is very difficult to erase as a memory. An abusive adult at home may inflict this behavior as a routine activity. The children are traumatized and they personality can weaken. A child has a right to grow and learn the facts about life, but the child subjected to physical abuse and deep mental scars. Children imbibe the quality and display acts of violence as they believe that this is the best way to get their way out.

In several cases, the children are not able to concentrate. Their grades fall and their focus is shifted. It is of paramount importance to guide the children and make them stand up for their rights. As the mother who is aggrieved does not have a self esteem, the children grow up to become weak personalities. Parenting styles certainly come on to children. Such children may have several problems like dyslexia, shyness, timid behavior and in many cases children are aggressive and have no control on their temper.
