Environment Day

The issues pertaining to safeguarding our environment are hotly debated all across the world. The situation has come to such a pass that governments and social organizations are frantically trying to educate and make people aware of hazardous consequences of environmental damage. The current situation highlights the importance of World Environment Day (WED) celebrated every year on June 5. The concept of environment day first began in 1972 and since then the planet has continued celebrating this important day. Organized and led by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), World Environment Day reminds us of the urgent need of preserving nature. Every year, UNEP creates a particular theme. The theme of 2010 World Environment Day is ‘Many Species. One Planet. One Future.’ As per the norm, this year African country Rwanda has been chosen as the host country. The choice of the country is inspired from initiatives taken by it in terms of green policies and environmental causes.

This year, Rwanda has been designated as the 2010 WED host country because of taking initiatives like restorations of area rainforests, implementation of eco-friendly policies, ban on plastic bags, clean-up campaigns and focus on renewable energy sources. These initiatives coming from Rwanda truly deserve appreciation because of country’s poor economic condition and other serious challenges faced by it. Rwanda has the reputation of housing numerous endangered and diverse species apart from cultivating and promoting wonderful natural environment.

The purpose of World Environment Day is to educate and encourage people to indulge in daily ecological friendly activities which will help us in preserving the nature. One should learn to live a green life by following simple steps. Small changes make huge impact and that’s why all of us need to contribute our bit to the environment. Eco-friendly activities are planned all over the world on World Environment Day. Various means like green concerts, recycling efforts, street rallies, tree planting, clean-up campaigns, and bicycle parades etc are organized all over the world on June 5. It is a wonderful way to remind people of their responsibilities towards the nature.

World Environment Day helps people in connecting with each other for a common cause. We can always begin with small steps like using energy efficient bulbs instead of traditional power guzzling tubes. We should use recycled products. Paying attention to taps in bathroom and kitchen can help in conserving precious water. We can also reduce our dependence on automobiles and help in reduction of carbon emissions. Plastic bags should be avoided and trees should be planted. We need to avoid wasting stationary. Eco-friendly things should be given priority. It is our duty to instill a sense of respect for nature and environment in our kids. The purpose is to save the earth in any possible way.

We need to remember that little drops make an ocean. Similarly, if each one of us contributes a little, we can make our world worth living. Our happiness depends upon how we treat Mother Nature. Begin your drive to save environment today.
