Knitting is a passion to sew a stitch and gain a style. Knitting bags is one such knitting offspring. It is always in vogue. You carry one to a social occasion or a casual outing and you will never be termed outdated. Simply because knitting bags are here to stay for a very very long time.

In India, knitting bags are available in a variety of patterns. New styles are always being innovated to give the lady something different to carry. Besides the purl stitch some simpler and complex stitches are endeavored to give the bag a different look. Moreover knitting bags are sturdy due to the thick strings used and hence have wider usability.

The exact origin of knitting bags is not known. It is believed to have originated in B.C. but that too is disputable. Knitting is believed to have begun with socks, as they had to adhere to a shape so that it is wearable at the foot. From then on knitting evolved into many more categories as besides a fit it also kept the body warm.

After the world wars knitting came into mainstream, as many colors and a variety of threads were available. Knitting was taught in schools, as it was known to be a profitable skill and not just a hobby.

Knitting aficionados have taken this skill to higher echelons by knitting simple bags, and imbibing beads, tassels and various other materials to increase the aesthetics of the bag. The trend today is small petite bags that look charming as they dangle on the wrist. Also knitted bags look classy with a metal frame. That was the vintage style but has never gone out of trend. Drawstring is another style, which was a yesteryears design that too is in trend today.   ~ author Lata S. Batra.
