CLAT refers to Common Law Admission test. It was first conducted during the year 2008. The concept of CLAT took birth after top law institutes of the country decided to sign a memorandum of understanding to conduct a common law admission test. This was done with a view to streamline the process of admitting students to the 5-year LLB courses in India. This was a significant step for the legal education of the country. This helped in reducing the burden of students of taking different entrance examinations. CLAT is the most competitive exam for the law study in India.

CLAT is an all India level law entrance test. The exam is conducted for admission into different undergraduate and postgraduate level law programmes. CLAT was first conducted by the National Law School of India University, Bangalore in 2008. The statutory body for CLAT is NALSAR University of Law, Hyderabad. CLAT score is accepted by several prestigious law institutes in the country apart from top eleven law Universities of India.

Courses offered through CLAT are;

B A LLB - Bachelor of Arts & Bachelor of Laws and
LLM – Masters of Laws

For undergraduate LLB program, candidates must have passed senior secondary or equivalent examination in any discipline from a recognized Board, with at least 50% aggregate marks. Candidates must have completed 20 years of age as on 1st July of the year of admission. For LLB, the CLAT test paper has 200 questions that students are supposed to complete within 2 hours. There are five sections in the test paper including,

English and Comprehension
General knowledge & Current Affairs
Elementary Mathematics
Legal Aptitude and Awareness and
Logical reasoning

For postgraduate LLM program, candidates must have cleared LL.B/B.L. examination or an equivalent examination from a recognized University with not less than 55% marks in total. The entrance paper for LLM is of two hour duration and includes objective type questions, short answers and essay.
