UPSC is associated with prestige, power and elevated social status. Despite the arrival of several new job avenues like IT, management etc, UPSC has not lost its charm and demand among the young Indian population. Lakhs of students appear for ICS every year but the success percentage is mere 0.1% and that says a lot about difficulty level of this exam.
In the month of December, UPSC publishes notification of the details of Civil Services Examination. Applicants can obtain the brochure and form from the designated post offices throughout the country. UPSC Civil Services Examination is held in three stages. First stage, i.e., the preliminary written Examination is held in the month of May whereas main written examination is held in the month of October or November. Preliminary exam comprises two papers each of two hours duration. The first paper is on general studies whereas second paper is based on an optional subject chosen by the candidate.
Based on the results of Preliminary exam, students are selected for the Main Written examination. The written paper comprises of nine papers of Indian languages, English, Essay, General Studies (two papers) and any two optional subjects chosen by the candidate (each having two papers). Only candidates shortlisted through Main Examination are called for an Interview, which is the final stage of the selection.
As far as Civil Services examination eligibility criteria are concerned, candidates must have a Bachelor's Degree or equivalent from any recognized University. Applicant must be above 21 years and below 30 years on the 1st August of the year in which examination is being held. Successful candidates are allocated different posts based on their ranks obtained in the Civil Services Examination. Candidates can also express their preferences for various services and posts.
