The 70’s Crocheted Poncho
look is back! The poncho has now taken center-stage. It’s the latest rage on
the fashion scene.
In the 70’s, the Poncho existed in just about every possible variation –
from the crochet to the more rustic Eastwood style Mexican Poncho that
became very popular at the time.
Today’s fashion scenario offers poncho patterns in 6 designs; three for
knitting and three for crochet.
Worked in Chenille yarn, Purple Poetry is a crochet pattern having a long
”V” shape in the front and back of the poncho. A knit poncho with cable
running through with a hood worked, as a part of it is known as Cozy and
Cabled, a pattern that gives a warm and comfortable appearance. The criss-cross
type of appearance is part of the crocheted Chenille Glamour, while the
Purple Poetry accents a vertical appearance. Another knit pattern called
Ultra Fun is short with a fringe around the edge and features the
stockinette stitch. There’s yet another pattern for a poncho called the
Evening Sonnet, and as its name suggests looks soft and romantic. A crochet
pattern that’s reminiscent of the poncho Clint Eastwood wore in spaghetti
westerns a few decades back is known as the South West serape
poncho.
There are some great designs on the cards for Spring/Summer 2004. Take a
look at this beautiful Airy design called the Olive Garden which features a
beautiful Olive Tree inspired neckline and border, while the Touch of Egypt
comes with a Lotus Neckline; the Vintage style trellis crochet poncho… and a
whole gamut of designs.
Crocheted poncho is extremely versatile. It can be worn any which way one
chooses – on the shoulder, off-shoulder or one shoulder. It’s perfect for
the warm weather, providing an additional layer over a skimpy top or halter.
You can wear it with a pair of jeans for a casual look or dress it up with a
skirt. Look hip and happening with it.
