fabric stores

The nomenclature is misleading. Fabric stores do not sell only fabrics. There is more to it than meets the eye. Some of the stores have a huge inventory and the finished quilts that are displayed are just mind boggling. They have sewing machines and conduct sewing, quilting and crafting classes. It is so easy to find yourself over spending at such stores. There are stores that supply thread and also house basic and unusual fabrics. New and used machines are there for sale. If you want to join a sewing club, then this is the place you do it. Fabric stores with two storeys have fabrics, books, decorating hardware on one floor and Fabrics, books, patterns and designs to suit everyone on the other floor.

There are heirloom stores (small but fabulous), which contain silks, wools, cottons and velvets. If you want to pick up yarn, ribbons, antique buttons or old lace, then you have struck gold. The larger stores have fabrics for dressmaking, some designer and some ethnic in one half and the other half is devoted to home decorating. Warehouse sized stores offer flat fold fabric. Fur, satin, print anything you can conceive, but be prepared to do some hunting. It will take you quite a while to discover what you are looking for.

A huge selection of Bridal fabrics and plastic lined tablecloth fabrics are available. Tons of patterns and designs at reasonable prices are available for sale. Wedding dress supplies, smocking supplies and fancy fabrics and laces - name it and you have them all. If you have time and your purse is full, this is the place to splurge.

Fabric stores just do not sell; they offer to do work for you. Hemstitching of blankets and bibs for babies, making custom designs for some customers and sewing for others are some of the things that the owners offer to do. Children are always special and there are fabric stores that offer preprinted quilt tops of children themes and also specialize in knit juvenile print fabric. The owners support the local sewing group by donating flannel, which is transformed into baby quilts and baby bibs. These are donated to charity. Some stores have Specialty fabrics and cater to every need of a sewer. They also sell fabrics at discounted rates and are really good places to strike a bargain. So the next time you walk into a fabric store, remember there is more than you really bargained for.
