medieval clothes

It was actually in the medieval times that the tailoring business was developed and fashion as a concept originated.

There really was not too much of a difference in the way the people of the various social classes dresses, that is there was no distinct difference in the way the clothes were cut and styled, the differences were evident mostly only in the colors and the fabrics used.

The poor country people prepared their own fabrics and the noble and the affluent classes had the option of buying their own imported fabrics.

Now what kind of Materials do you think were used in the medieval clothes?  It was the domestic wool, which was revised into cloths of different and varying strengths –the durable, felt and carded fabrics. Among all of them the most expensive, the finest and the most colorful cloth was undoubtedly the most expensive merchandise imported from anywhere. On the other hand preparing the fabrics and the threads was a very time-consuming yet a valued craft.

The Fabric was very valuable irrespective of whether or not it was homemade fabric or an imported one. The threads in the medieval times were spindled with a distaff (an early version of a spinning wheel). About 15 000 metres of finished thread was required to make an entire dress whose density of threads was 12 threads per centimeter. The thread was tightly woven making it very durable.

What kind of clothes did the medieval man wear? The countrymen mostly sported a linen shirt, as it was the dress of the working contemporary man. And the long, dragging clothes were typical clothes for the rich in the medieval times. The buttons were found their way into usage first in the 14th Century, though at that time, they were more used only in men’s clothes than in the women’s clothes.

Armorial shapes and mi-parti outfits were typical clothes in the medieval times. The quantity and also the quality of the medieval woman's clothing depended mostly on the status of the woman. The queens adorned elaborate, and exquisitely detailed gowns while the peasants were found in ill-fitting hand-me-downs. It was the noblewomen and the wealthy wives of merchants who could afford the more costly clothes. Copyright.Indianchild.com
