shopping bags

Deubener, a grocer from Minnesota can take credit for the invention of the shopping bag. When he saw people were constrained from buying groceries in large quantities because of their inability to carry in bulk, he came up with the idea of a prefabricated paper bag with a cord running through it. Called the deubener shopping bag, he sold over a million bags in a single year. That was the beginning of the shopping bag and ever since then paper bags have always been popular.

A modern version of this is the Rope handle bag, which uses high gloss laminated paper with knotted handles made of cotton cord. Cardboard at the bottom of the bag strengthens the base and cardboard in the handle area reinforces the handle. They are easy to grip and comfortable to carry your groceries in.

A more economical version of the shopping bag is available. Made of recycled paper, it has twisted paper handles. It comes in different sizes and best of all is biodegradable. The hi gloss shopping bags have a glossy finish and are available in vivid colors. Their twisted handles are easy on the hand. Nylon bags with or without zipper pockets can be folded and put into your pocket. Very useful to have as they can take a lot of load and not complain. We also have knapsack shopping bags with wheels. If you are not in the frame of mind to carry your groceries, just pull the bag along. These are available in different colors.

Bags made from cotton are easy to carry, wash well and are hard wearing. Like bags made of canvas, hemp and jute, they also are biodegradable when they get too worn to be of any use. Canvas bags are really very strong and there is never any fear that the handles may give way at an awkward time. If you are going on a wholesale shopping spree, this could be the answer to your prayers. Not so attractive to look at, Canvas is very durable. Plastic is an inevitable part of man’s life. Shopping bags made of this material have many advantages. They are light, available in all sizes and not very expensive. There are many versions of plastic bags. You have the extremely thin yet strong variety, the thicker and equally strong variety but the disadvantage is that not all forms of plastic are biodegradable.

Shopping bags made of wheat starch are making an entry into the market. As they compost fully in a couple of months, they would be ideal.
