table linens

Table linens add a celebratory touch to any meal,  be it a casual dinner with friends or birthday party. Most hosts like to set up a formal table and show off their exquisite crockery and cutlery, which is further enhanced with just the right table linen.

Traditionally, most people would prefer making their own table linens.  They would embroider the tablecloth and the napkins with beautiful flowers, fruits or abstracts.  Some would also have designs in cross stitch patterns sewn on the tablecloths, napkins and runners.  More recently, some people have also indulged themselves with fabric paints to make their own exclusive table linen.

Table linens are available in sets, which consist of tablecloths, napkins, napkin rings, runners, place mats, doilies and table pads.

It is a fact that a formal tablecloth must hang down from the table to at least 15 inches.  The tablecloth could be square or round or even rectangular depending on the shape of the table. One could even put a square tablecloth over a round one in complementary colors.

Placemats are more popular now than in the earlier days.  They come in different shapes and sizes in materials, which make them suitable for both casual and formal dining.

Doilies are not very popular though they are sometimes used to place the wine/drinking glass of guests.

Napkins come in standard size of 6 inches  for cocktail, 20 inchs for luncheons and 24inchs for dinner.  They can either be of the same pattern as the tablecloth or it could be a mix and match to add color to the table.  Napkins are also sometimes used to line a breadbasket  to add some flair to the meal.

Runners are normally rectangular in shape and run along the length of the table.  They are used to set the table decorations on it before the guests arrive.  They are also available in various shapes and sizes.

Table pads are not really mandatory but they do help protect the table from any accidental spills there by increasing the life of your table.

Table linens are made from different materials, which range from chintz, cotton, calico, damask and polycotton. However, one is free to express one’s own innovative style by using a material of choice and colors.
