Jewelry crafting and trading has been one of the oldest trades around. But the structure of the industry and the market is changing considerably. Fashion jewelry is shaping the market demand today. The industry structure is moving from retail to wholesale.

Though at one time, the trade was a craftsman’s trade also including manufacturing and retailing, nowadays it is normally only a retailer’s trade. The large jewelry chain stores, which also used to be involved substantially in both manufacture and retailing, now mainly concentrate on retailing.

In recent years, there has been a huge shift, with chain stores dominating and taking an ever-increasing market share, at the expense of the independents. In order to survive, many of the smaller players have moved up-market, leaving the middle and lower ranges of merchandise substantially to the chain stores. And in turn in order to increase competitiveness, many of the smaller players have also formed buying groups, in order to obtain better terms from manufacturers.

On the other hand, the jewelry itself has also been subjected to great overhauling due to the introduction of purchase tax in the late 1950's, combined with factors like shortage of gem material, and increasing costs of precious metals. The result of all these factors coupled with totally new and sophisticated processing and manufacturing techniques, have all combined to move jewelry away from the old and standard style of lavish jewelry and has helped to create a completely new style of jewelry biased more towards artistic content rather than intrinsic value. In other words, traditional jewelry has given way to Fashion Jewelry.

Jewelry design has also over the years become an art, which is more sculptured; it also now uses more of the semi-precious and artificial gem materials. The use of the concept of diamond milling has also resulted in the growth of fashion jewelry, which can be defined as artistic yet inexpensive jewelry being made available to a wider market, which is a wholesale market.
