Womens fashion in footwear has undergone major changes over time. There have been coat pairs, open toed stilettos, boots of ankle, knee and even thigh lengths, and every so often the sexy strappy sandals  - to name a few.
 
Womens sandals it has been reported made a dramatic comeback in the 1920s as skirts started going shorter in length.  This era saw the emergence of the t-strap sandals, whereas in the 30s the wedge platform sandals made an appearance.

Shoes in the 40s, on account of the war like situation were heavy and clumsy. With the war-like situation and shortage of raw material, shoe designers started experimenting with alternate material like fabric, raffia and plastics.  The uppers for sandals came from material such as felt, hemp, and straw. 

The pioneering efforts of Ferragano gave the fashion world sandals straps made out of cellulose and paper braided with gold thread! The 60s once again saw the reemergence of flat and sensible looking sandals.  However, a decade later, high-heeled sandals made a fashion comeback. Backless sandals were on the most wanted lists of women as they were considered to be glamorous.  Manolo Blahnik and Maud Frizon once again gave the world the peek-a-boo sandal.
 
Nowadays with minimilistic chic making the rounds, flip flops (or thongs) are making a special appearance on the party circuit.  For the out-door types, there are sandals and sandals.
