  The land of Bengal has always been associated with art and culture. A breeding ground of famous personalities in the field of art, drama, theatre, poetry and paintings, Bengal always occupied a significant place in the map of India. It has made incomparable contribution to cultural aspect of the country. Bengali movie industry has always been known for giving us living legends, whether it’s acting or directing. Who can forget names like Satyajit Ray, Ritwik Ghatak, Mrinal Sen, Tapan Sinha, Budhhadeb Dasgupta, Rajen Tarafdar, Gautam Ghosh, Aparna Sen, Utpalendu Chakrabarty and Rituparno Ghosh when it comes to handling directorial rein? These names amaze us because of the sheer talent oozed by them. Every one of them has made himself immortal in the realm of not only Bengali cinema but also Indian cinema.

Bengali movies have come a long way since its inception. Also known as Tollywood, Bengali cinema has ably been complemented by drama and theatres. Talent has always remained in abundance when it comes to cultural landscape of the region. People here have a passion for movies and music. Bengali cinema relishes on songs and dance sequences. Several factors have contributed in the richness of Bengali cinema like, passionate people, talented artists, theatrical literature, competent technicians and cultivated middle class population. The close connection of literature and cinema is evident by the way Satyajit Ray made use of works of Rabindra Nath Tagore.

Bangal has also been credited with giving us hugely talented actors. Names like Uttam Kumar, Saumitra Chatterjee, Utpal Dutta, Chhabi Biswas, P.C. Barua, Bikash Roy, Ranjit Mallick, Prasenjit Chatterjee and Tapas Pal are shining examples of talent possessed by Tollywood. Actresses are no less in terms of sheer screen presence or number of awards won. Some of the names are, Suchitra Sen, Sabitri Chatterjee, Supriya Choudhuri, Kanan Devi, Debasree Roy and Rituparna Sengupta. In the annals of Bengali movies, some name will always stand; Damu, Atmiyo Swajan, Grihajudhha, Uttara, Mondo Meyer Upakhyan, Unishe April, Paromitar Ek Din, Paroma, Titli, Baksha Rahoshyo, Nishijapon, Bombaier Bombete, Anuranon, Dahan, Utsav, Shubho Mahurat, Chokher Bali, Dosar and several others.
