The Indian film industry is one of the
oldest and the largest in the world. Almost 1000 movies are released
every year in India. Indian film industry is made up of Hindi Movies as
well as several regional cinemas like Telugu, Tamil and Malayalam. In
terms of reach and popularity, Hindi movies take the largest pie of the
cake. As far as major production centers in India are concerned, Mumbai,
Chennai, Kolkata, Bangalore and Hyderabad are the names to reckon with.
Hindi movies and Hindi remix songs are popular all across the world. From the realm of
obscurity, Indian cinema has traveled a long way in last 100 years. If we go back to history pages, the first traces of cinema go back to 1896 when the famous Lumiere Brothers' of France demonstrated six soundless short films in Bombay. India’s first short film was made in 1899 by Harishchandra Bhatvadekar. The trend of short film making went on for next two decades. Indian cinema reached a new milestone with release of India’s first full length silent movie ‘Raja Harishchandra’ made by Dhundiraj Govind Phalke who was generally known as Dada Saheb Phalke. This movie set a new landmark in the nascent stages of Indian film industry. In next few years, more and more new movies were being made. 1930s witnessed new revolutions in the industry. The first spoken film of India, Alam Ara was made in 1931 and it was directed by Ardeshir Irani. It was a huge hit and opened flood gates for Mumbai film industry. This film also led to trend of talking films in other regional cinema and since then Hindi film industry has never looked back. Sooner than later, the concept of playback singing also came into existence. Songs and dance sequences soon started to become a part of Hindi film industry. Actors like K L Sehgal, Prithvi Raj Kapoor, Raj Kapoor, Dilip Kumar, Balraj Sahni, and Ashok Kumar made a mark for themselves. Some of the famous films during that period were Achoot kanya, Do Bigha Zamin, Mother India, Awara, Pyasa, Shree 420 and many more. It was just the beginning of a lifelong romance between Indian public and Hindi cinema.
