Kannada movie industry is also known as
Sandalwood film industry. One of the popular regional cinemas, Kannada
movies are made in the state of Karnataka. In the state of Karnataka,
some of the movies are also made in Konkani and Tulu. Kannada people are
quite passionate about movies and dramas and that’s why Kannada movie
industry has kept flourishing over the years. The industry is known to
produce plethora of hugely talented artists. The most famous of all, Dr.
Rajkumar was an extremely versatile actor who made people flock to
cinema theatres. He was hugely talented and had a captivating voice. Kannada movie industry took some time to develop. Till the 1950’s and 60’s, it was more in the shadow of powerful regional cinema industries like Tamil and Telegu. The prime reasons were lack of sponsors, lack of technological equipments and huge influence of the neighboring cinemas. Most of the movies during those eras were dubbed versions of other regional movies and it was not before the 70s that Kannada cinema took a flight of its own. The history of movies in the state also began with silent cinema and first production house was established in 1928. Slowly but steadily, Kannada cinema made a mark for itself in Southern film industry. Now, the movies studious here are enriched with latest technical know-how and presence of talented artists has made Kannada film industry one of the most sought after. Artists like Gubbi Veeranna, Balakrishna, Puttanna Kanagal, Prabhakar, Lokesh, Anant Nag, Girish Karnad, Manjula, Ravichandran, Narasimharaju and Dwarakesh etc have earned accolades and popularity because of their sheer talent and works. One person that completely transformed the film industry of Karnataka was Girish Kasaravalli. He gave rise to what is popularly known as new wave cinema. Girish Kasaravalli has won National awards no less than four times and that speaks volumes about his meaningful contribution in the evolution of Kannada cinema. Stars like ShivrajKumar, Devaraj, Anjana, Vanitha Vasu, Jaggesh and Loknath etc further popularised Kannada movies. Karnataka government also helped in the cause by awarding 50 percent tax exempt fee for films made entirely in the state. This brought more interest and subsequently more revenue. Stars of other film industries like Mani Ratnam, Kamal Hassan, Anil Kapoor also dabbled in Kannada films. Related: Kannada film songs
